Hilary Paynter

Hilary Paynter's working life began with art teaching and led to her training as a Chartered Educational Pyschologist. Her career in education ran parallel to that in wood engraving for 35 years.

Hilary was instrumental in the re-forming of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1984 and has been its lynchpin ever since, first as Honorary Secretary and then as Chairman.

Her engravings are in the collectionS of the Ashmolean, Fitzwilliam and Victoria and Albert Museums and of city galleries such as Birmingham, Hereford and Portsmouth.

Recent publications include Fragments for the Satyricon by Petronius. She had a major solo retrospective at Hereford City Art Gallery in 1992.

Hilary has had several commissions including 'From the Rivers to the Sea' at Central Station Metro Station in Newcastle (commissioned by Nexus) and more recently a series of panels with images of the Ouseburn area at The Media Exchange development on Stepney Bank, Newcastle (commissioned by Priority Sites). These images are available as wood engravings from Northern Print.
