‘UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL’ EXHIBITION CARVES OUT THE MEANING OF PRINT

11th April – 7th June 2008

Northern Print, the North East-based centre for contemporary printmaking, opens an exciting new exhibition on Friday 11th April, designed to provide an inspiring insight into the world of printmaking and its many forms.

Showcasing a contrasting display of limited edition prints alongside unique drawings, paintings and other one-off pieces, the exhibition – entitled ‘Unique and Original’ – allows the viewer to gain a clearer understanding of what constitutes a genuine ‘limited edition’ print, whilst exploring the many techniques practiced by artists today.

Anna Wilkinson, Director of Northern Print, said: “Prints can easily confuse people – are they ‘originals’, what really is a limited edition and what is it worth? This exhibition attempts to dispel the myths by showing limited edition prints alongside unique works of art by the same artist.  It is interesting to see the intrinsic qualities of each way of working and to see how these very different artists have responded to Northern Print’s invitation to ‘make a print’.”

Contributing Artist, Angela Hughes, comments on the different techniques used within her work: "Within the context of my practice as an artist I use the processes of painting, photography, video and print. The process of print itself has been vital in that it has constantly enabled me to re-invent and generate new possibilities with regards to the use and integration of these media within my practice as a whole.

“My experience of printmaking is that it has offered me an ever changing and moving journey. Every print I have produced is 'unique and original', to me there is no difference in making a print to that of making a drawing or a painting, video or photograph.”

Presenting a retrospective of Northern Print’s co-published works from the last 14 years, ‘Unique and Original’ includes a range of drawings, paintings, monoprints, textiles and glass. Artists include Sian Bowen, Louise Cattrell, Katherine Dowson, Angela Hughes, James Hutchinson, Julian Meredith, Colin Rose and Donald Wilkinson.

With the range of facilities available at Northern Print’s award-winning Ouseburn home, the organisation is fast emerging as a significant force in Newcastle’s thriving arts industry. Providing a service not only to established and up and coming artists, but also to educational groups and the general public, Northern Print continues in its quest to bridge the gap between arts and business, and make quality contemporary work accessible to the wider community.

‘Unique and Original’ is open to the public from 11th April – 7th June 2008. All work is for sale. Admission is free.
