JAPAN MAKES ITS MARK IN NORTHERN PRINT AS NEW EXHIBITION IS UNVEILED
‘Japan Prints Now’
20th June – 16th August 2008

Northern Print is set to enjoy an oriental makeover when it launches its exciting new exhibition – ‘Japan Prints Now’ – on Friday 20th June, celebrating some of Japan’s most promising artistic talent.

The exhibition will display the work of three up and coming Japanese artists selected by renowned printmaker, Hiroyuki Suzuki, who has enjoyed a long association with Northern Print, including an Artist Residency in 2007.

The three chosen artists are Chizuru Kondo, Maiko Segawa and Ema Shin, all of who employ the woodcut printmaking technique – a method synonymous with Japanese art and famous images such as Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave of Kanagawa’. Whilst a number of Japanese prints from this memorable era are available in collections throughout the UK, it is a rare treat for art lovers to experience contemporary Japanese prints right on their doorstep.

Anna Wilkinson, Director of Northern Print, said: “Northern Print has had an ongoing relationship with printmakers from Nagoya, Japan for almost 10 years and we have played host to a number of talented artists who have led master classes and workshops at our studios. In addition, our work with Nagoya Print Works has meant that North East artists have had the opportunity to show their work in Japan. It’s a real privilege to unveil these new Japanese works to the UK audience and we’re thrilled to be working once again with Hiroyuki, who has been a tremendous inspiration to our artists and visitors alike.”

In keeping with the company’s ethos of supporting the best in regional and national printmaking, works by North East artists Elizabeth Talbot and Chris McHugh will be on display simultaneously during ‘Japan Prints Now’ in Gallery 2 and all will be available for sale.

‘Japan Prints Now’ is open to the public from 20th June – 16th August 2008.

Admission is free.

Opening Times: Wednesday – Friday, 11am – 5pm; Saturday 12 – 4pm.
