We aim to make printmaking accessible to everyone through a programme of classes and courses. We offer professional training in all aspects of printmaking as well as introductory courses for beginners. There is also a Schools and Groups Education Programme and we hold frequent events for children and families.

Northern Print offers a range of fun printmaking courses for all levels of ability. They are a great, fun and sociable way to develop or expand on printmaking skills.

JANUARY – DECEMBER 2010

Screenprinting at Northern Print (2-day course)
This course is ideal for people who want to begin screenprinting and who wish to come back and use the studio. This is an introductory course which takes you through every stage of the process step by step. You will learn how to prepare a screen with a light-sensitive emulsion and transfer an image. Images can be made using drawing, photocopying or digital print outs. You will be able to print your image in colour in a small edition.

Wood Engraving with Chris Daunt (1-day course)
During this course, one of the region’s leading wood engravers Chris Daunt will guide you through the process of wood engraving. You will be shown how to transfer a simple image on to a wood block, how to use specialist tools to cut the block and then how to ink and print it. All tools and materials will be provided and there will also be the opportunity to purchase specialist materials at the end of the course.

Drypoint (1-day course)
Drypoint is a process of drawing directly into a metal plate, the ‘burr’ thrown up by the drawing will hold ink which will then be transferred onto paper when printed using an etching press. The line produced  by a drypoint print is unique to the process and varies from being soft and tonal to dense and velvety. You will learn how to prepare your plate, draw an image and print it, changing and correcting the image as you go along.

Introduction to Etching (over 3 evenings)
Etching is wonderful process that allows a range of marks, textures and tones to be printed in colour or monochrome. This course will introduce the basic principles allowing you to prepare, etch and print your own copper or zinc plate.

Japanese Woodblock Printing with Paul Furneaux (1-day course)
Northern Print is pleased to bring Edinburgh-based artist Paul Furneaux back to the North East to share his skills in Japanese woodblock printing. Japanese woodblocks have a luminosity of colour and are printed by hand using waterbased inks making it a wonderful process for those who don’t have easy access to a press. This is a rare opportunity to learn this process from someone who trained in Japan. Paul was a Mombusho Scholar and studied at Tama Art University, Tokyo. Paul has a unique and painterly approach to the technique and encourages participants to find their own way of working once they have learned the basics. You will learn how to carve your own woodblock and be able to print in colour on Japanese paper, producing a range of prints. Specialist materials will be available to purchase at the end of the day.

Colour Monoprinting (1-day course)
This one day workshop explores the subtlety and vibrancy of colour and texture through monoprinting.  This is an ideal course for beginners with the opportunity to produce a wide range of prints to take home at the end of the day.

Photoetching (over 2 evenings)
This is an introductory course in photoetching during which you will learn how to transfer hand-drawn marks, found objects, photocopied images and digital images on to a light sensitive plate.  Suitable for beginners.

Photo-Lithography with Lee Turner
We are delighted to welcome back Lee Turner with his wealth of knowledge and skills in lithography. Lee established his own studio, Hole Editions in 2005 in Newcastle upon Tyne after training as a Master Printmaker at Tamarind Institute, University of New Mexico, USA.  Photo-Lithography uses traditional lithographic printing methods with the added bonus of transferring images using a light sensitive plate. This course is suitable for those with some printing experience.

Ex-Libris: Design & Print a Book Plate (over 6 evenings)
Leading Wood Engraver Chris Daunt will be running a wood engraving course over 6 evenings, which will result in you producing your very own book plate. Chris will take you through the tradition of book plates (also known as Ex Libris) and will then help you to design, cut and print your book plate as a wood engraving. No experience is required – suitable for complete beginners. You could make one for yourself or even as a Christmas gift for someone.

Talks

James Hare – Artists’ Talk
James Hare, a visiting artist from Canada, will be giving a talk in the gallery at Northern Print. James has taught photography at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada for the past 5 years. His photographic work is based firmly in the documentary tradition & his photographs feature the various families & locations he moves through and becomes part of. He also engages in sculpture, examining miniature fantasy buildings & most recently, he's been exploring screenprint at Northern Print.

BOOKING COURSES
If you would like to know more about any of the courses or book a place please contact the studio. We will be happy to talk you through the courses and help you decide which one is best for you. fees must be paid in advance to guarantee your place on a course.
We will send a booking confirmation and a receipt once payment has been received.  You may pay over the phone with a credit/debit card, or send a cheque by post. Courses are suitable for those 18 years old and over.

CANCELLATIONS
If you have booked a place on a class and cannot attend, please inform Northern Print as soon as possible. If notice is given at least 2 weeks before the class begins, we will refund the payment in the form of credit, which can be used as payment for an alternative class. If notice is given less than 2 weeks before the class begins, we will not be able to give any form of refund. Northern Print reserves the right to cancel classes and courses in which case full refunds will be given.
