‘Brilliant’, which derives its name from the quote of an artist who attended the courses, will showcase a diverse range of work from etching to textile printing. The exhibition will feature new and stimulating pieces of work by printmakers who have attended the course, whilst also showing the inspirational works of their tutors – some of the country’s leading artists.
Northern Print’s CSDI programme of workshops was designed to equip local artists with knowledge and opportunities to help transform their passion into a lucrative business. Funded by the European Social Fund and led by Arts Council England, North East, the CSDI is a unique training programme which was established in June 2003 to overcome the barriers which often inhibit cultural organisations, such as limited training budgets and restrictions in applying for financial help. Anna Wilkinson, Northern Print Director, is delighted that regional printmakers had the opportunity to get involved and reap the rewards:
“Northern Print is all about encouraging people to fulfil their potential, and the CSDI programme has been a unique opportunity to invest in the region’s talent, offering masterclasses led by some of the country’s leading artists. This professional training has provided artists with further inspiration and aspiration, the results of which we are incredibly proud to showcase within Northern Print’s beautiful gallery space.”
Mark Robinson, Executive Director, Arts Council England, North East commented, “We’re thrilled that Northern Print have really embraced the opportunities that CSDI affords. CSDI has given the artists new skills and training and they’ve produced some wonderful work as a result.”
With the range of facilities available at Northern Print’s award-winning Ouseburn home, the organisation is fast emerging as a significant force in Newcastle’s thriving arts industry. Providing a service not only to established and up and coming artists, but also to educational groups and the general public, Northern Print continues in its quest to bridge the gap between arts and business, and make contemporary work accessible to the wider community.
‘Brilliant’ is open to the public from 8th February – 5th April 2008. All work is for sale. Admission is free.
