NORTHERN PRINT PRESENTS IT’S FIFTH EXHIBITION
From 12th July – 2nd September 2007

Northern Print – North East based centre for contemporary printmaking - continues to show contemporary printmaking at its best, exhibiting a striking collection of work by Louise Cattrell, Alec Finlay and Theresa Easton with pieces spanning the magical structure of trees and the beauty of the ‘word’ form, to the fragile nature of knowledge.

Showing in Gallery 1, Sylvan  presents new works by award winning international artist Louise Cattrell.  Meaning ‘of woods’ Sylvan is a collection of etchings and monoprints. Each of the etchings, are taken from drawings of direct observations of trees and signify a particular place where the artist has lived and worked, starting in Switzerland and moving on to France, Wales and England.

The large scale colour monoprints, in contrast to the monochrome and intimate scale of the etchings, represent the artist’s experience of looking up into the tree and wood.

“Trees form an iconic part of our cultural and national landscape. Their structure frames and edges the boundaries of garden, field and mountain; their silhouette bridging land and sky. Imbued with symbolic virtues and qualities they form an integral place in our historical and mythological imagination.” - Louise Cattrell

After studying at the Royal College of Art, Cattrell has shown her work widely throughout the UK and beyond – including at The Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, Birmingham City Art Gallery and The Fruit Market Gallery in Edinburgh. She has won many awards for her work and secured residencies worldwide including the internationally renowned Berwick Gymnasium Residency.

Gallery 2 exhibits works by internationally known artist Alec Finlay who has conceived a series of collaborative projects using the form of the mesostic name poem (Mesostic Laboratorium, Mesostic Curriculum).

Mesostic Herbarium, Word Garden presents a series of screenprints which were made as part of the one of these projects alongside Creative Partnerships Sunderland and Durham and incorporating work with seven schools. The prints in this exhibition were produced as a co-publication with Northern Print.

‘Language is like nature; crossbred, evolving, influenced by habitat, time, climate and use. A word can be grafted and bound in poetry’. - Alec Finlay

Born in Scotland in 1966 Finlay is an artist, poet and publisher. He came to live in the North East in 2002, when he became the first artist in residence at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. Recent work includes an artist in residency at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, where he created a series of art projects on themes connected with nature and contemporary culture; other residencies and performances have included those at Kielder and Tate Modern.

A highly acclaimed artist across the UK, he won the Scottish Design Award in 2000 and was nominated for this again in 2007, while his work has been shown at many major galleries including The ICA in London, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead and The Royal Scottish Academy.

He is currently artist in residence at NaREC, leading New and Renewable Energy Centre in the North East.

Finally, Fragile Knowledge in the Cabinet Space, presents a series of printed glass ‘books’ by Theresa Easton, which have been inspired by her time at Newcastle’s Literary & Philosophical Society - the largest independent library outside of London – where she is currently carrying out a residency. The work portrays a brief glimpse into the heritage of the library and the industrial achievements of the region.

“Exploiting the natural, transparent properties of glass, the material forms layers of printed visual information.  A dialogue between the 2-D visual images and the 3-D object develops to form a series of Artists’ books”.  - Theresa Easton

Theresa studied printmaking at The University of East London and is currently studying for an MA in Glass at Sunderland University. She has exhibited her work all over the UK, including at The City Gallery in Leicester, Wrexham Print International and The Corn Exchange in Leeds.
