Story of a Studio

22 Feb - 17 Mar 12

Northern Print, the regional centre for printmaking, is a place where something new is made every day. The latest exhibition ‘Story of a Studio’, puts this claim to the test by showing a changing display that evolves as new work is conceived, developed and finally printed.

The gallery will be like a giant pinboard – with prints and proofs on display, this will include prints that have been unsuccessful, experimental work as well as finished prints from studio artists & course participants, all with a little explanation of what they’re about.

Who else could make watching ink dry so fascinating!

The exhibition will include works created during some of the many printmaking courses happening at Northern Print throughout February & March, such as relief woodblock printing, etching, wood engraving & screenprinting and, if visitors are inspired to have a go, they can sign up to Northern Print’s mailing list to receive future course info.

Studio Printmaker Helen Donley will be completing editions of screenprints and some of the proofs will be on display so visitors can see how the screenprint process works and, as well as all of this, Northern Print studio users will be adding to the display on a daily basis. The studio currently supports over 200 users each year who come along to use the facilities.

Come along to see the real life of this unique space for printmaking in the heart of Newcastle’s Ouseburn Valley – and if you want to keep up to date you can follow the artists on twitter and flickr.

Director, Anna Wilkinson explains the idea behind the show, “the gallery is really the tip of the iceberg of everything that is Northern Print, many people visit the exhibitions but don’t realise what else goes on here. The studio is really the heart of what we are and it’s great to throw the spotlight on to this aspect of our work – This is only the second time we’ve done ‘Story of a Studio’ so I’ve got no idea what we will end up showing, it’s very exciting and proved to be extremely popular with studio users and visitors when we did it in 2011. It’s a great chance to present visitors with a ‘window’ into the studio”.
