Lisa Andrén and Ellen Heck

10 May - 1 Jul 17

This year Northern Print is delighted to welcome two international prizewinning artists, both of whom are noted for their fine skills in drypoint printmaking.

Ellen Heck (USA) and Lisa Andrén (Sweden) were Northern Print prize-winners at the 2014 and 2016 International Print Biennale Print Awards respectively.  Both artists are completing residencies at Northern Print over the coming months and a selection of their prints will be shown during this time.

Lisa Andrén

Lisa’s work was selected to be shown during International Print Biennale 2016, during which she won the Northern Print International Residency Prize.

Lisa lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden and studied at Forum Academy of Printmaking Arts in Malmö, Sweden (1970- 74). Her work has been exhibited worldwide including in selected group exhibitions Latitud 60, Kunstverket Gallery, Oslo, Norway (2016); Printmakers from Ostersund, Babel Art Gallery, Trondheim, Norway (2015) and 10 Printmakers from Sweden, Art Museum, Novosibirsk, Russia (2012). Solo exhibitions have included: Islands, Nynashamns Art Hall, Sweden (2016); Islands, Solvesborgs Art Hall, Sweden (2015); The Printmaking Art Gallery, Stockholm (2015) and Gallery Kaz, Västeras, Sweden (2014).

Awards include: International Culture exchange/travel, Swedish Visual Arts Fund (2015); Foundation Art Award at Källskär, Åland (2013) and The Swedish Visual Arts Fund (2008 – 2009). Lisa has worked in and been inspired by Åland, Finland; Iceland; Greenland; Connemara, Ireland; Lofoten Islands, Norway; Hebrides and Shetland Islands, Scotland.

The artist writes, ‘Movement - Eye – Hand. The hand acts as an extension for the eye, how an observation is carved into the plate, the sheet and perpetuates the fleeting moods. Working with graphics is a purely physical experience; a black sooty line accentuates movements, rhythms and shape, which intensifies the expression. The dual and opposing interests me as a reflection, twins, front / back, comes / goes’.

Ellen Heck

Ellen’s work was selected to be shown during International Print Biennale 2014, during which she won 2 prizes – the Northern Print International Residency Prize and the V&A Print Prize.  The latter award gave the artist the opportunity to have her winning print/s included in the V&A's collection and featured on the V&A's website with text about the work by Gill Saunders, Senior Curator (Prints)

Ellen Heck has degrees in printmaking and painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and in philosophy from Brown University. She is currently living and working as a fine art printmaker in California. She has work in many notable collections including the V & A, Dartmouth University Library and The Cleveland Museum of Art, USA.

Northern Print is exhibiting a series of prints from Ellen’s ‘Lonely Hearts’ series. The artist describes the work as ‘a series of metaphorical portraits in which I have used hearts in compositions with figures to depict the many different types of love that we experience. Sometimes overt, sometimes subtle, the symbol is paired with the faces and hands of young people personifying ways in which this emotion can be felt, given, and shown’.
